Carefree Caracas: your guide to Caracas and Venezuela

Carefree Caracas

What we do ... and what we don't

Carefree Caracas is a private consultancy company founded by native English-speaking people living in Caracas. We do not provide any direct services to tourists but we are working with public authorities, private enterprises and local communities here in Caracas to propose and develop new tourism services designed to make it easy for English-speaking visitors to discover and enjoy the city, both as a rewarding place in its own right and as the gateway to one of the world's most entrancing countries.

Our first priority has been the creation of this website because Caracas has long suffered from a reputation that it simply doesn't deserve. As we point out on our home page, Caracas is full of attractions that are worth discovering and, in fact, most of its attractions can be safely enjoyed by all visitors even if they don't speak any Spanish. However, like most large cities anywhere in the world, Caracas also has areas that are best avoided. In practice, those of us who live here navigate quite easily between these two aspects of the city and the aim of our website is to give all English-speaking visitors the information they need to enjoy Caracas, whether they are travelling alone or with a group and whether they speak fluent Spanish or no Spanish at all.

In addition to the Carefree Caracas website, we are working on several other projects.

Carefree Caracas Bilingual Guides

Although Caracas has more than enough attractions that visitors can discover on their own, the existence of a pool of approved English-speaking guides opens up many new possibilities, especially for visitors who don't speak Spanish. These include visiting some of Caracas' most exciting late-night music and dancing venues, exploring the trails of the Ávila mountains, visiting parts of Caracas that aren't easily accessible by the metro or just meeting you at the airport. We are currently building a network of guides who speak good English, know Caracas well and agree to work in accordance with our Code of Conduct to ensure they provide the highest level of service. Our approved guides may work for local tour operators, the city authorities or as freelance guides but they will all have their photographs, CVs, and contact details published on our website.

The Carefree Caracas Welcome Pack

This will be available at a nominal cost to all visitors to Caracas. It will contain a new pocket guide to Caracas, along with our Carefree Caracas tourist map that will not only show the location of all the major tourist attractions but also indicate, using green and yellow shading, which parts of the city we consider to be safe for tourists day and night and which parts that are safe enough during the day but which tourists should avoid at night. Most large cities would benefit from a map of this kind and Caracas will be the first to provide one. The Welcome Pack will also contain a prepaid public telephone card and a pre-paid 10-journey metro ticket, with instructions on how to use them. We are currently in talks with potential sponsors.

Carefree Caracas Telephone Information Service

We also plan to introduce a bilingual English/Spanish telephone service that will provide many kinds of information and assistance for English-speaking tourists. These will range from immediate aid in the event of accidents or illness to help with booking tickets for concerts or visits to other parts of Venezuela. This service is currently at the feasibility study stage so please check our website regularly for news of progress.

We are also working on several other services that will help make Caracas one of the world's most visitor-friendly cities and will publish more details when we are further advanced.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT CAREFREE CARACAS IS NOT A TOUR OPERATOR.

We emphasise this because we simply don't have the resources to answer individual questions from prospective tourists. We do not sell holidays in Caracas or Venezuela but our "Useful Links" section gives details of companies that we know provide a high-quality service to their customers. Please contact them directly with your specific questions about your holiday.

We do read all messages that we receive via our "Contact Us" page. We cannot usually give individual answers but if the same question appears frequently we will add it to our Frequently Asked Questions section.
